Chinese Scalp Acupuncture for Neurological Diseases

Chinese Scalp acupuncture, also know as NeuroAcupuncture, is a contemporary treatment modality integrating traditional acupuncture needling techniques with the Western medical knowledge of the brain and it’s neurological functions; it has been used in Chinese hospitals since 1979.

Our central nervous system (CNS) consist of our brain and spinal cord. Our peripheral nervous system ( PNS ) consist of our head, neck, shoulders, torso, arms and feet which connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.

Unlike traditional acupuncture where one needle is inserted into a single acupuncture point, scalp acupuncture consists of needling the entire reflex somatotopic zones organized on the scalp as indicated by the Western neurological perspective.

Scalp acupuncture works by inserting acupuncture needles into the loose areolar tissue layer of the scalp to stimulate the brain areas and it’s neurons thereby modulating its’ impaired functions. An example is the somatosensory cortex which receives sensory information from the hands in a specific location on the scalp and information from the feet in another location on the scalp.

These somatosensory zones are the specific areas through which the central nervous system, endocrine system and its bundles of nerves are transported to and from the surface of the scalp through the spine and peripheral nerves. These zones correspond to the cortical areas of the cerebrum and cerebellum responsible for central nervous system functions such as motor activity, sensory input, vision, speech, hearing and balance.

The mechanism is three fold: to “wake-up” the brain cells that are not dead but lacking in proper functioning, to encourage recruitment of healthy brain neurons to perform the lost motor or sensors function and to promote a healthy integration of the central nervous system as well as the peripheral nervous system.

Scalp acupuncture has proven to be the most effective treatment for acute and chronic disorders of the central nervous system. The insertion of as few as 6 needles often brings almost immediate improvements just minutes after E-stimulation to the reflex somatotopic zones.
